The bliss of Solitude -

Amidst the green fields, along the bank of a pond
With not a soul in sight, I came to be alone.
In the storm that had passed - trees, innumerable
like transplanted seedlings, were strewn around.
In a small patch of land - a grove of coconut trees,
a sharecropper's livelihood - the storm had left alone.
A few had fallen, but many trees were untouched
let them live, had decided the God of Winds.
I have found solitude - it has its own meaning.
Solitude I've often found - has an essence of its own.
The ray that drives away the cold - is it not the nectar of life?
Majestic was the sun in the sky, spreading rays of happiness
that cheered the grains to sway in a song
I stood in the shade, amongst the trees that were left,
And understood, that in verse do I find eternal bliss.
Praise thee, goddess, those that praise thee live on,
Praise thee goddess, these are my words, forget not.

வீழ்ந்தன சிலவாம் - மரங்கள், மீந்தனபலவாம்;
நின்ற மரத்திடையே - சிறியதோர் நிழலினில் இருந்தேன்;
வாழ்க பராசக்தி!- நினையே வாழ்த்திடுவார் வாழ்வார்;

In this breezy expanse, Kannnama

In this breezy expanse Kannamma - I
feel blissful thinking of your love- Luscious
lips like a fount of honey -Moon
like eyes with serenity - Gold
like skin shining with brilliance - in this
world till I live - these will absorb
me, thinking of nothing else - make me
feel like a celestial being.

You are my life Kannamma - I will
sing thy praise every moment
All my sadness, my sorrows vanish - When
I see the lustre of your presence
I feel the nectar of love in my lips - when
I whisper thy name Kannamma
You're the light lit by the fire of my soul
You're my thought, my purpose in life.

An acre of Land -

An acre of land do I want - Goddess
An acre of land do I want - There
with carved pillars - balconies
painted in pristine white - In that
acre of land - such a house
do I need to be built - with
coconut trees hugging the well - ripe
with tender coconuts.

A dozen or so - Coconut trees
do I want nearby - like
the shine of flawless pearl - moonlight
do I want to be with me, the cooing
of the cuckoo - do I want to
grace my ears - to make
my soul happy - soft, gentle
breeze should be there too.

To sing songs of pleasure - there
I want a chaste damsel with me - In
our joyous union - verses
should flow freely - In
that sylvan locale - Goddess! Your
benign presence I need - With my
poetic abilities - should
this world be graced.

P.S. I am not Bharathi and prices in Chennai are too high for an acre of land. The mere mortal in me can only go for a vacation here

Song of Valli

Every moment my longing for you
is on the rise, you nifty Valli

Right now, in this foot hills
along the river bank shall I join you - In your
patriotic tamil songs shall
my heart burst with pleasure - In the
mass of your dark tresses, glistening lips,
slopes of your bosom, with love - shall I
embrace you and find the pleasure
of immortality here and now.

The white moon spreading its rays
covering the sky, you see - In this
well lit night, to join you in lustful union
and become one with you - lose my
mind amidst your smooth curves
and forget everything else - oh my
clear wise love - to blend as one
with you do I wish, you see.

Like the boat that goes round and round
wihtout leaving the pond ever - to not
leave you, but tease you here and there
without leaving your body for a moment - Oh
my sweetheart, with a face as radiant as
the daybreak's sun - to kiss you,
shower more kisses on you and again
to kiss and mingle with you did I come.

All that's gone is not gonna come back

தின்றுவிளை யாடியின்புற் றிருந்து வாழ்வீர்;

All that's gone is not gonna comeback, bugger - Don't
be lookin back at what's gone and think
and worry yourself silly to death.
Don't remember all that's past.
Refine your thoughts, think
you are born anew today - grab your
grub, play and enjoy your life.
All that crap is gone, not gonna come back

Flute

From where does this music rise - who
composed this melody- my friend?

Is it from that hillock? - or
from the boughs of this tree? - or
from the expanse of space? - makes
me lose my posture - this music.

The resounding waves of - divine Yamuna
river, is it from there? Or
the rustling leaves of the grove,
does this rise from there like nectar?

Is this from the forests? - Is it
the moon's breeze?- Does this song
waft from lands across the oceans?
This melody's melting my heart.

Is there any bird - that
sings this elixir like song?
Or is this the music of invisible elfs
playing their divine instruments?

Kannan's melodious flute is this,
elixir on my ears, poison in my heart
This is not a song but a dart
to pierce the heart of his lover, my friend

Nalladhor Veenai

Having crafted a wonderful Veena - will thou
spoil and consign it to dust?
Tell O' Goddess - I have
been created with wisdom by thee,
Won't you give me the strength - for me
to live a life fruitful to this land?
Tell me O' Goddess - will thou
make me live as a burden off this land?

Like a swiftly thrown ball - a body
ready to spring on brain's command I ask.
Spotless mind I ask - a life
born anew daily I ask.
Even when the skin is on fire - a heart
that sings thy praise I ask.
Unshakeable wisdom I ask - Is there
anything that stops thee from bestowing these?

Kannamma My love

On the river bank - If I wait
in the flower garden at the southern corner
you'll come you said - with your
friend when the moon is high.
You have broken your promise - Kannamma
my heart beats hard for you.
Wherever I look - I see images
just like you.

My body's burning - my head
is spinning with pain
All over the sky - see how
this moon is embracing her lover
Everything is silent - This
entire world is asleep Kannamma - Why
should I alone suffer this hell
called separation?

It is very hard - the guards are
always there in your palace.
Even after the slaves enter - I can't
come in whenever I want.
I can't stand this torture - full of
restrictions and guards over there.
Impartial queen are thee - then
Why are you shy to see me?

To meet together - the entire night
spent cuddling amorously-to
embrace you a million times,
fulfill my heart's desire - and
beam with pleasure singing
blissful songs - I haven't
been blessed to do that Kannamma.

Self Discipline

Things that are visible to me
Won't my hands take them all?
The sky that's visible from earth
Won't that become ours to call?
Thinking forever and trying
hard, will we finally lose?
Tell me O goddess thou who
are the sky, earth, my eyes and numbers.

The Promises, the pride, the successes
So many priveleges!
Control over self shall
get these and more
told the wise men of yore
in the scriptures.
Yet will we stand low
failing to control our self?

A translation

Blame it on my friend, whom I saw yesterday after a gap of 5 years. He was saying that there are hardly any English translations of Bharathi's work. Of course, that's not true. There are a lot of translations (scroll down and search for Bharati), only that they are not freely available on the net. He tempted me with the idea of starting a blog for translation of Bharathi's works. This new blog, A Spark of Fire, started off thus. Criticism and suggestions welcome.

To the Greatest Tamil Poet Ever

Did you think I will
Spend my days in
search of food,
Tell useless tales,
Hurt myself with my thoughts
and others by my acts,
Turn senile with grey hairs
And end up as fodder to the
relentless march of time
As yet another faceless man?

This is my attempt at translating this work of art by Bharathi. True to his words above, he died young, having accomplished a lot in the 39 years he lived.
