Are they serious?

"It is a notorious fact, of which we can take judicial notice, that more and more of the younger generation in this country is getting addicted to liquor.

It has not only become a fashion to consume it but it has also become an obsession with very many. Surely, we do not need an indolent nation.

Article 47 of the constitution clearly casts a duty on the state at least to reduce the consumption of liquor in the state, gradually leading to prohibition itself."

It appears to be right to point out that the time has come for the states and the union government to seriously think of taking steps to achieve the goal set by Article 47 of the constitution."

That was the advice of the learned Supreme Court Judges. Report in TOI here. (Tip by Vatsan)

This can't be good. Was this article put in by Gandhi himself? WTF? I wasn't happy when the TN government got in to the thanni business. Now for the supremes to nudge the government towards total prohibition is just insane.

The real outrage is such a law exists in the books. Now which party will have the balls to repeal this.

I think we should organise a whiskython to mourn this!

The concerned judge is probabaly frustrated that as a law UG he was not invited to any drunken orgies that are frat parties.

Either that or his wife isnt giving him any.

I was actually happy that TN govt got into thanni business, employed a few thousands..(Ok..Oka..amma made money through midas distilleries is a different story)

but govt managed to make money by breaking the mafias in liquor biz..

i think it is not govt's duty to preach ppl not to drink

"reduce the consumption of liquor in the state, gradually leading to prohibition itself."

Prohibition might lead to the following:
1) Mass migration of semi-skilled workers to the borders of neighbouring states, thus adding more liquid problems with other states like the Kauveri issue.
2) People choosing to drink Benadryl, zecuf and other cough Syrups to get high, thus leading to the cost of basic medicines getting high !
3) Liquor Companies having to "really" make stuff like KingFisher Mineral water rather than just advertise these.
4) Some Guy called Mooligai Murugan making "Herbal Liquor" and getting into a controversy with the National Association of Herbalogy!

So many problems ..why prohibition !
