The night before

I keep tossing and turning here,
Unable to sleep, with excitement and fear
Your mother must also be feeling the same
lying in the hospital bed, thinking about your name.

We still don't know whether you are a he or a she
Whether you are going to be Anirudh or Poonkuzhali.
"The name is funny" you'll scream when you grow,
We are braced for the tantrums you'll throw.

There will be moments in future,
When you and me can't stand each other.
But right now, all I want in this world is
the first glimpse of you, as you open your eyes.

The written word, my refuge for a long time,
isn't able to soothe me as I hear the clock's chime.
It is down to hours and minutes now,
Please don't trouble your mother much, after all she's my first love.

I wrote this on the night of 17th September, waiting for my second kid. Today morning we became parents of a boy, so it is going to be Anirudh.

Thanks a lot people. Why Anirudh? Well, I wanted to name the second kid after a character in Ponniyin Selvan, Kalki's historical romance and one of the all time favorites of Tamilians anywhere in the world.

Girl's name was chosen in a second, Poonkuzhali, the free spirited boat girl. It was her character that attracted me a lot, even better than Kundhavai or Nandhini.

Boy's name proved to be a tough one, Vandiyathevan, Arul Moli Varman, Rajarajan, Alwarkadiyan (yes I did think of that name for a second), none of them were to our liking. So we settled on Anirudh, a shortened form of Anirudha Bramma Rayar, the wise minister of Cholas.
