Chennai Trivia - 3

Most of you know that what is now called as TTK Road was earlier called Mowbray's Road. And if I ask you why, you will guess that one Mr. Mowbray lived there and you would be right too. This is the house where Mr. Mowbray lived.

So I ask you, what is present now at the location of Mr. Mowbray's house on Mowbray's Raod?

So many true blooded Chennaivasis here and the only one to get it right is the American. Shame on you guys :-).

YB is right, it is the Madras Club. Will you believe that this building still exists in good condition? You go down the road from Music Academy, cross the road after Park Sheraton and keep going straight. This is the last house at the end of the road, only now it is called Boat Club Road. The original Mowbrays Road led to this house.

I get a glimpse of this building during my early morning walks. All the trees have now grown so you can't see much from the road. The Madras Club is the premier club in Chennai, ranked above Presidency, Cosmopolitan, Race Club. And they have a big board warning Tresspassers will be prosecuted. If any one of you can get me into the club, will come back with the photo of how it is now.

Actually Chakra, I have been walking around this building for the past 6 months, but didn't know its importance. Only on browsing through the photographs of british library mentioned in the previous post, I came to know about this. And wasn't this easy :-)?

Chenthil - you admit it yourself. The average chennivasis ( ex- or present) can't get 'admission' intot hat club.

Every other firang I meet who has been to Chennai tells me they have been there though......

SO no surprise huh?

So have they taken down that sign yet - No Indians allowed.

Just kidding I don't think they had in the first place.........

Not fair. I knew the answer.
Mowbray's Road was also a favourite haunt of the British nobobs. Plenty of Garden houses in this and what is now Greenways road.

Nice, very nice.
Great idea. Look forward to more. Also, can you please check out http://puthagam.blogspot.com ?

What?! I'm not semi-Madrasi?

I lived right up the street from the Club, just behind Amma Naana. I got invited to the kosu-ridden Club once... by an Indian member.

Tilo, they still have a prominent sign stating Tresspassers will be prosecuted. And I agree that not many Chennai vasis get admission there. Have to find a way around it.

Ravages, is there any question I know for which you do not have the answer?

Ammani, have commented there.

YB, you are an honorary Madrasi. If I was the Mayor of the city, I would give you the keys and declare you a citizen of Chennai :-).
