What does this mean?

Did Rand really believe that the world should be run by such creators while second-handers (ordinary workers like most of us) humbly deferred?

From NY Times article on Ayn Rand's birth centenary. Why should some one write of himself as a second hander, beats me. Sounds like Elsworth Toohey's writing.
