Ameican Novels
I have been reading American Fiction Classics for the past few months, specifically novelists from US. My taste goes like Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Frank Norris, John Steinbeck. Actually I have read only one novel of each of these writers except Steinbeck. I am yet to start on Faulkner or Hemingway or the later novelists. What are the other names you would suggest?

In her early days, Ann Rice wrote under the pseudonym "AN Roquelaure". Check out her Sleeping Beauty fairytales.
Then there's Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
Abbie Hoffman's Steal This Book.
I also suggest Hunter S. Thompson.
David Baldacci, although I have read only one of his novels (The last man standing).
If you ask British authors, I quite like Peter Robinson, particularly "In a dry season" (http://www.inspectorbanks.com/dry.html). He takes us to the war time Brittain. Also, the way he introduces the "transit Brittain", eating curry, changing youths, etc.. is wonderful. I can relate myself with the places he mentions, that is another reason I stay with British authors.
First time hearing about this writrs.

Jack Kerouac
Saul Bellow is a personal favorite. Or Philip Roth. These two are widely considered the best American writers alive.
I like Raymond Carver a lot too - simple, insightful writing.
Scott Fitzgerald.
Perhaps Thoreau's Walden is something that you might want to try as well.

Robert A. Heinlein's books are excellent pieces of science fiction. He invented the word grok in his Stranger in a Strange Land, and he also wrote the famous Starship Troopers.
