Does it matter what your graduate course is?

Met a couple of friends last week for a drink. It was after eight years that all three of us were meeting together. I am a ship chandler (meaning: Potato seller), one is selling refrigerators for an MNC and the third guy is a banker. And all of us were top scoring mechanical engineering graduates. Does it matter what your graduate course is?
